10 years on from Brexit, we met with MPs to raise issues
Marking the 10th anniversary of the Brexit vote, more than 20 of us - the3million staff members and supporters - attended Parliament to speak to MP’s about the issues which continue to face EU citizens.
Meeting with MPs including Olivia Blake, Pete Wishart, Neil Duncan-Jordan and Helen Maguire, we were able to flag a range of issues, such as being denied boarding despite having a functioning eVisa, and the problems married women face when their EU Settlement Scheme status name is in their birth name whereas the DVLA, HMRC and DWP know them by their married name.
10 years is a long time, and it is far too long for so many people to still be being failed by the Government. We were promised that our rights would be protected, yet too often people are excluded from even getting status. For those who do have status, there is a threat of losing it, especially since the Home Office has introduced new procedures for removing pre-settled status from those where they think, based on travel data that is sometimes seriously flawed, that people have left the UK. Increasingly the Home Office is also revisiting original grants of status, claiming their caseworkers made an ‘error’ years ago when granting status.
Meanwhile, others are denied their rights even when their status is recognised. The digital nature of the system in particular excludes people from being able to access those rights, such as working, renting or accessing healthcare and support.
This is a situation which the3million has campaigned on since we started, and will continue to campaign on. We need your support to do this. If you can donate today, please do. Your help means we can continue to petition MPs, launch strategic litigation, and fight for the rights of EU citizens. The same issues which we face are embedded in the whole immigration system, and we will continue to fight for change.
