FAQ
I’ve changed my email address / mobile number. Do I really need to keep my UKVI account / eVisa updated? What happens if I don’t update my digital status with my new contact details?
It is really important to keep your email address and telephone number updated in your digital status, for the following reasons:
- Each time you want to log in to your digital status via the View & Prove service, a security code will be sent to the email address or telephone number that is linked to your account. You will need that security code in order to go on to view your status, and create share codes to prove your status. So if you no longer have access to the email address or telephone number, you will be unable to log in.
- The Home Office is beginning to look at some people’s EU Settlement Scheme status to examine whether they are still eligible for status*. If they suspect you are no longer eligible, they will contact you using the email address and / or telephone number linked to your digital status. You may only be given a short period of 14 days in which to respond to their email - so it is very important that your contact details are up to date at all times. See this FAQ and this FAQ for more details. Make sure you regularly check your spam or junk mail folders in case you miss any important messages from the Home Office. In the worst case scenario, if you miss an email from the Home Office when they are reviewing your status, it could lead to your status being cancelled at some point in the future without you knowing about it.
Therefore, make sure you update any changes to email address and telephone number via the Update my UK Visas & Immigration account details service. If you have already lost access to both your previous email address and telephone number, and therefore cannot receive the security code required for login, see here for how to recover your account and restore access to it with a new phone number and email address.
* A crucial eligibility criteria you must be aware of is maintaining continuity of residence with pre-settled status. Please check our absence calculator and further resources here, and our FAQ: The Home Office has sent me a letter saying that my EU Settlement Scheme limited leave to remain (also known as pre-settled status) may be curtailed. I’ve been given 14 calendar days to prove my rights. Can they do this? What should I do? I’m really worried.
