Can I apply for British citizenship and still keep my EU passport / nationality?

It depends on your EU country of citizenship.

Some countries, such as The Netherlands, Austria, Spain, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Slovakia and Slovenia, have restrictions on dual citizenship. There may be some exemptions within those restrictions, which can be complex.

Others, such as Romania, allow dual citizenship with the UK for all their citizens.

In 2020, the3million Young Europeans created a document which gives more detail. These rules are also debated from time to time in some countries and they may have changed. For example, Germany changed their laws in 2024 to allow dual nationality.

It is not possible for the3million to provide a definitive list of countries that allow dual citizenship, because this is determined by national legislation and can change over time. We would strongly recommend anyone considering applying for British citizenship to research and seek advice on the laws govering their particular nationality, to check that they can acquire British citizenship without losing their other citizenship. Your embassy or consulate website may be a good starting place to find information about your country's rules on this issue.
