FAQ
I have an immigration status which is not connected to the EU Settlement Scheme. How do I create a share code?
This depends on whether you have a UKVI account. People with status under the EU Settlement Scheme do, but so will many others. Throughout 2024 the UK Government encouraged people with biometric residence permits (BRPs) to apply for a UKVI account and access an online version of their immigration status, also known as an eVisa. See https://gov.uk/evisa for more information.
If you do have a UKVI accountYou can view and prove your status through this website: https://www.gov.uk/view-prove-immigration-status. When you log in and see your status (see this FAQ if you need more details), there is an option to generate a share code and you will be asked whether you want a share code 1) to prove your right to work, 2) to prove your right to rent, or 3) for something else.
For proving your right to work, you can alternatively choose to use this website: https://www.gov.uk/prove-right-to-work by choosing the option “I have a UK Visas and Immigration Account”.
And for proving your right to rent, you can alternatively choose to use this website: https://www.gov.uk/prove-right-to-rent and again choosing the option “I have a UK Visas and Immigration Account”.If you do not have a UKVI account
You can only create share codes for proving the right to work or rent, you can’t create a share code for ‘something else’. This means that if other organisations ask you for a share code, for example a bank, or DVLA for driving licence applications or renewals, then you will need to explain that you can’t provide one. Instead, you’ll need to send them your biometric residence permit (BRP) that you should have been issued with. Most of these BRPs will be expiring on 31 December 2024 however, so the Government is encouraging people to create a UKVI account. BRPs expiring on or after 31 December 2024 can still be used to demonstrate eligibility to travel back to the UK, until at least 31 March 2025.
Because you don’t have a UKVI account, you can’t update your digital status with contact details, or link identity documents such as passports to your status.
- To prove your right to work, use this website: https://www.gov.uk/prove-right-to-work and choose the option “I have a biometric residence card or permit”.
- To prove your right to rent, use this website: https://www.gov.uk/prove-right-to-rent and again choose the option “I have a biometric residence card or permit”.
As a transitional measure, expired BRPs can be used in these right to work and right to rent websites if your underlying immigration status is still valid and you don't yet have access to your eVisa through a UKVI account.
