Reflecting on a successful EU Citizens' Gathering 2026

Last week, we were delighted to take part in the EU Delegation’s fifth EU Citizens' Gathering, bringing together EU citizens, the community organisations, policymakers, researchers, campaigners and specialised groups, such as the Independent Monitoring Authority, from across the UK to discuss the issues that matter most to our communities.

Over recent months, we have been working closely with the EU Delegation to the UK to help shape this year's gathering, and it was fantastic to see so many people come together in Birmingham for a day filled with thoughtful discussion, collaboration and shared purpose.

The programme brought together an impressive range of keynote speakers, including EU Ambassador to the UK, Pedro Serrano, alongside panel discussions and interactive workshops exploring the experiences, contributions and future of EU citizens in the UK. Throughout the day there was a real sense of unity as participants reflected on the progress that has been made, while also recognising the work that still lies ahead.

We were especially pleased to host a workshop showcasing our EU Voices project, delivered in partnership with Fondazione Giacomo Brodolini and co-funded by the European Union. Together, we explored why sustainability and solidarity are essential to successful campaigning, and how strengthening community networks can help ensure EU citizens' voices influence policy and public debate for years to come.

Another highlight of the day was co-facilitating a workshop bringing together academics and civil society organisations to discuss the latest research on the experiences of EU citizens in the UK. By connecting lived experience with academic evidence, we explored priorities for future research, to help shape better policies and improve understanding of the challenges our communities continue to face.

We also led discussions on the ongoing and emerging citizens' rights issues affecting EU citizens in the UK. Participants shared experiences from across the country, identified practical solutions to current challenges, and discussed our longer-term aspirations for protecting rights, strengthening communities and ensuring that EU citizens remain at the centre of discussions about our rights.

Thank you to the EU Delegation to the UK, the University of Birmingham, our fellow organisers, speakers, facilitators and everyone who attended and contributed to making this year's gathering such a success. We look forward to building on the conversations that began in Birmingham and continuing our work together to champion the rights of EU citizens across the UK.
