FAQ
My biometric residence permit (BRP) / biometric residence card (BRC) expires on 31 Dec 2024 - when and how do I renew it?
The reason your biometric residence permit [BRP] or biometric residence card [BRC] expires on 31 Dec 2024 is that the Government is moving to an all-digital system. Even though your card expires then, it does not necessarily mean your status or rights expire. See this GOV.UK website on eVisas for more information: https://www.gov.uk/evisa.
The Home Office is encouraging everyone who currently has a physical proof of status, to apply for a UKVI account in order to access their status in digital form, known as an eVisa.
Important: people with status under the EU Settlement Scheme already have a UKVI account and do not need to apply for a new one - see our FAQ 'I have (pre-)settled status under the EUSS. Do I need to apply for an eVisa or set up a UKVI account?' for more information.
If you have a BRP/BRC and were granted status before the end of October 2024, you should have received a letter from the Home Office confirming when your leave expires and advising that your BRP/BRC may expire earlier. If you do not already have access to your immigration status information online then you may rely on this letter as confirmation of the actual expiry date of your leave.
Once you have access to your eVisa, you will be able to use the View and Prove service to see the correct expiry date of your leave.
