To get settled status, I was told I need to be in the UK for at least 6 months every year. Do the 6 months need to be in a row or can they be spread out throughout the year?

If you already have pre-settled status, there is more than one way of counting absences to qualify for continuous residence. See our FAQ What does ‘continuous residence’ or ‘continuity of residence’ mean?

When counting your periods of residence / absences, it does not matter if they are in a single block, or if you take multiple trips outside of the UK. What matters is that the total absences do not exceed the allowable maximum absence.
