FAQ
If I travel, will I face any problems when coming back to the UK? I am outside the UK - will I be allowed to enter the UK? What are my rights to enter the UK? What documents will I need to show at the border?
The rules around the right to enter the UK are very complex and depend on many different pieces of legislation. If you think you are eligible for status under the EU Settlement Scheme, then factors such as your nationality, whether you were living in the UK before 31st December 2020, and whether you put in an application to the EU Settlement Scheme before the 30th June 2021 deadline or not, all play a part.
The digitalisation of the UK immigration system, and the introduction of the UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme are affecting what documents you need to travel. See our FAQs:
- I’ve heard EU citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) if they want to travel to the UK from next April. I am an EU citizen with (pre-)settled status under the EUSS - what does this mean for me?
- I have (pre-)settled status under the EUSS. Do I need to apply for an eVisa or set up a UKVI account?
- My biometric residence permit (BRP) / biometric residence card (BRC) expires on 31 Dec 2024 - when and how do I renew it?
- I’ve renewed my passport. Do I really need to keep my UKVI account / eVisa updated? What happens if I don’t link a new passport or national identity document to my digital status?
- I have applied for (pre-) settled status but am still waiting for a decision. If I travel abroad, how will I prove my rights to UK Border control to come back to the UK?
- I have applied for EUSS status from outside the UK, as a joining family member. I received a Certificate of Application which tells me that I have the right to work in the UK. Does that mean I can now travel to the UK?
