Fix the Digital Status - Parliamentary Pledge

I pledge to call on the Government to launch an immediate public inquiry into the Home Office’s implementation of digital immigration status. I will write to the Home Secretary and work with other MPs cross-party to urgently set out the need for such an inquiry:

  • Investigate the problems with the current implementation of digital immigration status, examining in particular the impact and harm these have caused and continue to cause, including barriers to accessing essential rights and services.

  • Investigate the system’s data protection breaches.

  • Establish the inclusivity, accessibility and reliability of the current implementation, examining in particular the impact on vulnerable and digitally-excluded people.

Additionally, I will:

  • Advocate for secure alternatives to the digital-only immigration status, such as a QR code or physical proof of status, to provide a reliable back-up.

  • Push for the establishment of a 24/7 human-staffed hotline for urgent status resolution and support.

  • Call for clear, and accessible compensation mechanisms to address harm caused by system failures or errors.

I agree with the3million that this is not a mere technical issue but about our duty to protect the dignity and rights of all migrants and individuals and ensuring that no one is left behind in the shift to digital-only systems.
